Ojibwe Language Training

Walpole Island Employment and Training Program

We're passionate about preserving and promoting
the Ojibwe language.

At Giyakiishchigewin Employment and training we are passionate about preserving our Ojibwe language! In 2022 we launched in-person and online Ojibwe Language and Cultural Literacy Classes! We believe that language is a powerful tool—not only for communication between people but also for expressing yourself and your culture. It’s our goal to help you learn how to use your native language in ways that are meaningful to you. We want to help people discover their language and keep it alive for generations. To bring more culture and language to our programming, we re-named our program Giyakiishchigewin, which means, “getting a good foothold or getting a good grasp, of something usually pertaining to life.”

Our classes are free introductory Anishnaabemwaans classes that provide a training incentive for those eligible. We look forward to offering more Ojibwe Language and Cultural Literacy Classes! Although classes are not currently running, they will be added to our calendar of events and announced on our social media channels.  If you would like to pre-register for these free classes click the button below.

We created a video series of Anishnaabemwin Phrases of the Day with George “Jaach” Trudeau.
