People with disabilities can work and want to work. Equitable hiring makes businesses and communities thrive.

Through our membership in the Ontario Disability Network (ODEN) and MentorAbility Ontario, we provide valuable resources to community members with disabilities. Additionally, we partner with Wallaceburg Community Living.

Rethinking Disabilities in the Workplace

Myth: People with disabilities are less reliable employees.

Fact: On average, they often have better attendance rates than their peers.

Myth: People with disabilities will always need extra help.

Fact: Like anyone, with the correct training, employees with disabilities can work unaided.

Myth: People with disabilities should be given jobs where they can’t fail.

Fact: It is equitable to provide employees with disabilities opportunities to challenge themselves.

Myth: It costs too much money to accommodate employees with disabilities.

Fact: Most accommodations are inexpensive and are often subsidized by government funding.

Myth: An employer’s insurance rates go up when they hire people with disabilities.

Fact: Insurance rates are only based on the potential hazards in a workplace, not who is employed there.

Myth: People with disabilities are more likely to have accidents.

Fact: Workers with disabilities often observe safety measures more carefully than their peers.

Fact: Many studies find that workers with disabilities consistently meet or exceed job performance standards.
